Posted by Mike Fisher on February 7, 2008 We’re all looking forward to the skills competition we’ll be holding here on Sunday afternoon. It’s kind of a fun event. It’s pretty relaxed and it’s for the fans, basically. We just go out and try to have some fun, and it’ll be a time to show the skills – or lack thereof – that we have. I won the hardest shot competition last year, but I don’t have anything special planned to defend my title. I might tweak the stick a bit to get an extra mile an hour but I haven’t been practising for it. I expect I’ll have some good competition this year. Schubie’s a contender, for sure. Meszaros, Corvo … there’s guys who are going to be gunning for me. I’m hearing we’ll have at least 15,000 people out on Sunday. That doesn’t really surprise me. The fan support that we’ve had all year has been great. Some of the open practices we’ve had, you see all the fans out. It’s pretty amazing. It adds to the whole thing if there’s a lot of people there. Hopefully, we can make it enjoyable for them. It’s coming down to the stretch run for us now. We’ve got 28 games left, and this is when we’ve got to start ramping up our game. We obviously haven’t performed as well in December and January and there’s the trade deadline coming, with changes possible and a lot of different factors. But we’ve got to step it up. There’s always a little bit of tension about the trade deadline. It’s worse for some guys more than others because of the rumours you hear. It’s a tough time, for sure. At the same time, it’s about making your team better and realizing that it’s possible. None of us really have control over that. Definitely, some guys think about it and there’s nervousness about it, for sure. |

I am really looking forward to the skills competition on Sunday, this will be the third year in a row that I have attended and the crowds have been progressivly growing. I really enjoy watching the team having a good time and showing off some skills. But my favorite part is the children that participate with the guys, very fun to watch. Looking forward to an exciting end of the season and a long playoff run.

I think you'll do great on Sunday. :P
Posted by: cait | February 07, 2008 at 08:36 PM
You don't have to worry about being traded, that's for sure! My only worry is that I love seeing you play with Alfie, but he's so good with Spezza and Heatley that it's hard to break them up. Hopefully you'll settle in with a sweet line by post-season. And you're one of the guys who makes it pretty easy for us fans to be fans of the team, so I'm not surprised 15,000 of us will be there! Good luck in the competition and win tonight's game (3-3 right now)!

hey Michael,
It is always great to watch the skills competition. My family has gone since I was really little... I like that the team seems to sit back, hang out, and ham it up for the fans. That is the best! I can't wait!
Have fun Sunday. ;p

Mike , you cant fool us. You work hard, are in great shape and obviously take your responsibilities with your career very seriously. we enjoy watching you add energy into the play when it has been flagging and also your commitment to making things happen on the ice every time you are out. We do hope yall have some fun out there on sunday...and on from there too. Our team is the best and when things are going well, you all look like you are having fun. when things not going well, got to find a way to have fun again, lighten up the tension and relax about outcomes. We understand that life in pro hockey is tough , it is work , and it is about business, but if you are not having fun, isn't it game over on the high performance arena??? Seems to me if its all about the work with no sense of play we all lose. As for the trade deadline, and the pressure that results from listening to the rumor mill, somehow the sideshow will go on but today on the ice, is the only thing that counts..and you nailed it tonite so ...its a good day!cheers, looking forward to seeing you have some fun with montreal saturday night. cas

I’m thrilled that fans are finally getting a blog post from you, Mike! It is interesting to read that players do feel concerned about the eminent trade deadline. In your case, I wouldn’t have any worries…you’re staying put right here in Ottawa! Regardless of the recent string of losses, it’s inspiring to read and hear about your constant hard work, determination, and focus to win. Also, I must thank you for setting up your official fan-club. It’s an overdue outlet for Sens fans that truly like…Mike! All the best for the reminder of the season! So far, so good!

I can't wait for the Skills comp on Sunday...Only problem is, I have super crappy tickets!! Oh well that's okay, it's going to be a fun family event *going with Maman and Papa*. Go Mike Go!!!! You'll defeat your title :). I'm happy to see other players are getting involved in the Blog now! not that Alfie & Spezza weren't doing a good job by all means...But its fun to read what other people have to say also.
Does anyone know where we can find out about Open Practices I have emailed the club asking about them etc, but no response! :( I'd love to attend one!!!
Have an awesome day guys! :)

Mike,
I always wondered how trade rumours affected the pysche of the players, it's definitely a sad part of the game. As a fan, we sit here hoping our favourites remain on the team. But you're right, ultimately it is what makes the team better. The possibility to bring the cup to Ottawa, what a dream for the team and the fans.
Mike, good luck on the hardest shot, you'll blow them away definitely! Also, to you and your team mates, know that the Ottawa fans are behind each and everyone of you 100%!!!!
Go SENS Go!

Hi Mike,
I was happy to read your blog! We've been going to the Sens skills competition for many years, and we love it! It's a fun day! It's nice to see the players in a different light. I'm also worried about the trade deadline. I hope we don't loose to many young players like Vermette... I also want to tell you that it's was super to watch the Overtime show when you were the guest and to hear you talk about your faith was very touching. I loved that episode! Keep up the excellent work you do every night you play! GO SENS GO!!!

Thank you very much for being such a great, honest, and hard-working player. You and the team really held it together when Alfie and Heatley were out of the lineup. I noticed you were getting some extra interview time when Alfie was away too. No doubt, you are one of the leaders who will take this club to the Cup and into the future. And, I believe, in order to lead you also have to serve. You serve the team in every regard by being an example of what hard work and dedication really means.
I've been patiently waiting for Sunday, the one and only time I've ever wanted to see a weekend go by faster. Can't wait to see you defend your title.
Go Team RED

i hope you are a senator for life mike! you are an awesome person on and off the ice.

hey mike,
i've been fortunate enough to get the chance to watch you play from your first year with the club to the present, where you have truely blossomed as a player. best of luck in the rest of the season! i can only wonder what it must be like to go from a city where 15,000 people show up for a Skills Comp. to city where the arena is half filled for a league game. Does it affect players at all?
much love!

Hey Mike,
I just wanted to congratulate you on your cup run last year. You were like a man on fire!!! If not Alfie, then you were definitely MVP!! It's nice for us fans to know we don't have to worry about you getting traded. I expect to see the "C" on your jersey when (God Forbid) Alfie retires. Keep up the GREAT work. You are a force to be reckoned with out there. :)
I can't wait to see you on Bank Street this summer, with the Cup in hand.
